Verdugo Hills Council HAT Presents

Winter Camping For Scout Leaders

Southern California has many great opportunities for camping with your Scouts year-round but maybe you don’t feel completely prepared for the adventure of camping in winter conditions. This course is designed for registered adult Scout leaders who wish to learn about the special preparation but also the fun that winter camping can add to Scouting. It is also an opportunity to build on your outdoor skills and leader training and develop the confidence to camp in winter conditions with your unit.

The course consists of a Saturday seminar and a weekend field trip in the local mountains. Subjects covered during the course include preparing for and dealing with a mountainous winter environment; the physical demands of winter conditions; snow travel hazards & equipment needs; snow shoe technique; health & safety; navigation and route finding; campsite selection; menus; food & water needs; personal clothing & equipment; how to build and sleep in a snow shelter; how to stay warm, dry, and comfortable in any conditions; ideas on when and where to go with Scouts and much more. All this while emphasizing the importance of training and transferring leadership to your Scouts.
